#24: How to Know if You’ll Reach the Goal (podcast)

Pursuing a big goal can be EXHAUSTING! What makes it even harder, is that nagging voice in the back of your mind that says, “Who are you kidding? What makes you think you can actually pull this off?”

Well, there IS one clue that can assure you that your goal really CAN – and WILL – be yours if you don’t cancel the process. Sometimes that little assurance is all we need to muster the strength and courage to take one more step.

And then step-by-step, we get there.

Talking to teens

An actual message to one of my teenagers who was complaining too much about his responsibilities:

You’re doing so well in so many areas. But it saddens me that you blame dad when you don’t feel like doing your duties.

You’re old enough to govern yourself, so govern yourself or be governed. If you were governing yourself, you would already have plans to be where you’re supposed to be, even if dad wasn’t going, and even if he wasn’t expecting you there.

Freedom isn’t about doing whatever you want, it’s about willfully choosing to do the things that keep you on track to qualify for all the blessings that heaven has to offer. Each right choice increases your freedom. Each poor choice diminishes it. And I’m not talking about “consequences” that are implemented at home. I’m talking about your agency and how you get to use it every day in how you think and what you do.

As you know, we look for every possible reason to give you as much freedom as we (in good conscience) can. When you feel more restrained than you like, I encourage you to notice how good you have it, and be grateful instead of belligerent.

Your attitude (above almost everything else) has the greatest effect on, or is one of the greatest indicators, for what direction your life is headed, for good or for bad. Please, do not grieve me, and please do not disrespect your dad. He asks so little and gives you so much. Either way, you’ll answer to God for how you honor him, and you have so little time with him left.

Make this last year you’re home be one that you have no regrets about. I love you and am so proud of how much you’ve matured. I was impressed with how hard you worked this morning and I recognize you could have put up a much bigger stink than you did. Just pay attention to how you feel when you’re doing the right things, and then notice how much better it feels when you do the right things with a cheerful heart.

It’s a choice, and it will pay you great dividends if you learn that lesson early. Good night.. if you want to talk to me about this more, let’s do it after you get a nap tomorrow.

Where to put your focus

Here’s a question I received from a student at a State University. He writes:

I’ve absolutely loved the Jackrabbit Factor and it’s been of great help. In fact. I’m hoping that when summer is over, I can purchase the program that you have to offer, so that I can fully comprehend the law of attraction and subconsciously believe in success for myself and my future family. I’m curious to know. As of now, I’m working door to door sales and it’s been a tough ordeal because of many things. …I’ve put to paper how much I want to make at the end of summer and try my best to feel it as if I have it. However, when it comes to my numbers, realistically it doesn’t look like it’ll come to that. I try to be optimistic and believe that I could do it through the summer. I need to make some money so that I can get out of debt that’s been draining my life for the past couple years and so that I can invest in myself with education, financial stability, and create other opportunities.

Am I missing the big picture here?

I understand that I’m pretty new to this but I full heartedly believe that it’s a faith that can be developed and will help me with my future success. I hope to hear from you on this. However I do understand that you’re a busy lady and that you have responsibilities. I just really want to be successful in my life and I don’t think there’s someone more understanding than you when it comes to living paycheck to paycheck and striving for success so that you can provide a better life for your family. Thank you Leslie!

Here’s my reply:

I have a quick minute and would encourage you to focus less on the money goal and more on what the end result of having it would be. (Many times we set and achieved money goals but didn’t account for unforeseen expenses that came up, so the end result didn’t look any different than where we started).

Instead, think about what your life is going to look like when you have met all your obligations and can now begin planning for happier experiences. What are those happier experiences? Picture and feel those. And then trust that every time you see and feel that, the world around you shifts a little bit and the customers who want what you have are being prepared to receive you. It’s also important that you think right about the sales calls that don’t go well. For a guide to that read Hidden Treasures (free download) at www.hiddentreasuresbook.com – particularly the chapters on Perpetual Transmutation and the Laws of Polarity and Rhythm.

Bottom line, if you believe it’s possible to reach your summer sales goals, then your belief can actually be the reason it happens. These tips will help you build that belief. And you don’t have to have giant firm immovable belief, you only have to have a tiny bit of belief but with zero doubt. You can do it! 🙂 Leslie

He responded:

Thank you so much for the reply. That was really thoughtful in what you had to say and I’ll take it to heart. I can seriously feel the feelings that Richard had when he was learning about the importance of belief and how he wants to soak it all up for his benefit and the help benefit the lives of others.  I hope your day goes well … I …value your product which is why I hope to get it sometime soon. Thanks again…

Shoes, a ring, seashells, and $5000

Did you know?

The part of your brain that helps you achieve your goals, ISN’T the same part of your brain that sets the goals. I explain this in more detail in this video, where I talk about the subconscious mind and how it helps you (or keeps you from!) achieving your goals. But there is yet another part of your brain that has a different important role.

It’s called the Reticular Activating System (RAS), the entryway through which almost all data enters the brain, and which filters the information that comes in, having an effect on what gets your attention.

Think of it this way:

What if you need an opportunity—but you can’t see the one right in front of you? What if you need more customers—but you can’t think of that one incredibly effective thing you could do right now to reach them?

The answers we need are all around us.

The resources we lack aren’t as far away as we think. Everything we need is only an idea away; or in more scientific terms, your Reticular Activating System simply needs to be alerted to bring those ready-to-go ideas/resources/and people to your attention.

You’ve already experienced your RAS in action. Maybe you noticed that when you bought a car, suddenly that kind of car began showing up everywhere. Or, when you thought you invented a clever name for your child, pretty soon you started noticing other children all around you with the same name.

Sounds mysterious, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not as mysterious as you think.

While these kinds of experience may seem inexplicable, remember that the Universe operates very predictably based on a set of natural laws. The system was set up perfectly in the beginning, and it continues to run perfectly as planned. Almost like a computer program created to handle different scenarios in certain ways based upon the data input it receives. If X, then Y. If A, then B. Now that computers are such an integral part of our lives, we humans are beginning to understand how such a system could be structured and yet appear or feel so random.

You experience this every day.

The New York Times published the following story, which illustrates on the micro how simple a delivery-system like this can be, once it has been set up properly to begin with:

The shoes that Julie Matlin recently saw on Zappos.com were kind of cute, or so she thought. But Ms. Matlin wasn’t ready to buy and left the site.

Then the shoes started to follow her everywhere she went online. An ad for those very shoes showed up on the blog TechCrunch. It popped up again on several other blogs and on Twitpic. It was as if Zappos had unleashed a persistent salesman who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“For days or weeks, every site I went to seemed to be showing me ads for those shoes,’ said Ms. Matlin, a mother of two from Montreal. ‘It is a pretty clever marketing tool. But it’s a little creepy, especially if you don’t know what’s going on.” Helft, M. and Vega, T. (2010, Aug 29). Retargeting Ads Follow Surfers to Other Sites.

As this story illustrates, what shows up can absolutely be a result of the attention you gave something. Click on shoes, and they come back to your computer screen time and again, no matter what site you’re visiting. (In fact, this is exactly what is happening with me and a beautiful baguette ring I clicked on at the JC Penney website a few months ago. I’m not bothered… I think it’s gorgeous. It kind of makes me happy every time I see it. But I would remove the outer stones and only keep the center 5, and I’d put it on yellow gold, and I’m a size 5. In case anyone is wondering.)

So based on what you click on, your computer screen can very naturally become it’s own kind of vision board. Be careful to only click on the kinds of things you want in your life!

Computer software that uses targeted ads is just an example of how life itself works.

Based on what you think, your life begins to take new shape according to the nature of your thoughts. So only think on the kinds of things you want in your life! Think less about the parts you hate. Think more about the parts you love, and think lots about the way you want it to be.

What shows up in your life is very much a function of the thoughts you choose. Corresponding opportunities, people, and resources are brought to your attention in response. Don’t worry too much about the unwanted thoughts that pop in, just replace them as quickly as you can when they show up. And think often and emotionally on your hopes and dreams, because by the same kind of system that marketers use to target audiences, life will bring you the ideas, resources, and people you need to help you achieve them. It’s automatic, like a computer program.

And then expect to find those things! The expectation is what activates your RAS, so you’ll notice them and have a chance to engage with them when they arrive. In many cases those things are already right there, but you just haven’t noticed.

Here’s an example from one of my students of how this works in real life.

She wrote the following to my husband:

So, your wife is a genius! The book was incredible…I have a great story… I could not put the book down, finished it in just a few hours one night. I was at the beach with my kids the next day after I was done, and decided to test the theory. We belong to a beach club defined by huge rock jetties and good shells are hard to come by. We’ve never ever found a decent shell. Anyway, I walked down to the water and realized this was a great place to test…after all, no better place for the universe to be able to provide than the ocean!! So I put my energy on finding those big white gorgeous shells – we’ve never seen them anywhere near our beach. I imagined us all picking them and carrying loads back to the house… I reached down into the water and immediately pulled out a sand dollar – hmmm…

We walked the length of the beach, no shells. I did not let go of my focus. At the end, we went through the lagoon, and my kids climbed up on the last jetty. For the first time, they wanted to keep walking onto the next beach. They wanted to climb down the other side of the jetty and keep walking. At first I said “no” the jetty isn’t really safe to climb over, we could get hurt….blah, blah, blah…

Out of no where my youngest finds a small path that leads right over the jetty. We have never, ever noticed it before. We are now on the next beach, I go down to the water, and start pulling these huge white shells out of the water – bigger that we have ever seen. My kids are picking them up off of the sand…it was so weird! We had armfuls! OH MY GOSH. The jackrabbits had literally turned into shells! It was wild. I sat down dizzy at the experience, and then realized the power. Now, I’m working on doing this with bags of money…I picture myself walking into my back yard pulling up bags of money instead of weeds…hey, you never know!

Shells, check. But what about money?

She wrote again 2 Months Later…

Ok – so you may remember my first experience …after reading the Jackrabbit factor…the shells at the beach. Well, at the end I think I mentioned that I would like to attract bags of money…I have, and I am blown away. In early September I put out …that I would like to have $5,000 within three months. I was willing to work for it (should an opportunity present itself), but really, I just wanted the money to appear…hey, what the heck, one can dream. Well, my parents took us out to dinner this past Saturday evening as a celebration as they have recently come into some money from my Grandmother’s estate (she died in March). At the beginning of dinner my parents handed my brother and I checks for $20,000. Oh my gosh! I now put it out there …when I need about anything …the concept of scarcity is gone from my life…there is an abundance. Once again, thank you for the Jackrabbit Factor!!”

So have you tested it for yourself? Share your story here.

If you haven’t tested it yet, what one problem (big or small) would you solve today?

Collaborating with God to experience more joy

© Stephanie Lee Art, used with permission

I saw this post on Facebook From Stephanie Lee – one of our Mindset Mastery Program Participants, and thought it was profound and worth sharing. First, she quoted Danielle LaPorte:

“When you give yourself credit for making it this far in life—and still being a Gentle Soul—then you’ll know the Truth of Love. When, in a courageously still moment you hear yourself say, ‘I have everything I need right now,’ then you’ll know the Truth of Faith. And you’ll bring that shine to work with you. And to your causes, and your Loving, and your collaborations with the Universe.

“You will not be fearless, but you will be certain of what matters most.

“You will place your preferences on the altar of your life and say: ‘This! THIS is what brings me joy!’ And with the heavenly madness of Faith, you will live your Truth with the devotion it deserves.” -Danielle LaPorte

Then she added,

I love the part about not being fearless but being certain.

I have experienced this to be true so often and it is the certainty that gives me courage to move forward. Sometimes the certainty is only as tiny as the hunch to move one step left or right. Sometimes it doesn’t seem certain in the moment but rather just the next nudge I am given to act.

The overarching certainty that I am responsible for cultivating is that I AM being guided, that God is interested in and orchestrating all the elements needed for me to have a joy-filled life.

Thanks to Leslie, I now understand the power of the tiny certainties as essential elements of a genius + guided path.

Secondly, how beautiful is it to reframe what we “want” (and often don’t dare ask for, or doubt if it’s “right” to ask for) as what brings us joy?! I love that.

I love declaring what brings me joy, even in advance, and collaborating with God in experiencing more of that joy…AND allowing Him to bring me surprising new ways to feel joy that I may not have known about before…

Man is that he might have joy.

God said so.

Well said, Stephanie. Thank you for sharing!

#23: Mysterious Connections, Uncanny Coincidences

Successful goal achievers learn to rely on unseen help, mysterious connections, and uncanny coincidences to help them accomplish their goals. How do these events come about?

How can you activate this help in your own life? How can you know that the help is there, and what can YOU do to participate in those kinds of miracles?

In this podcast (recorded in 2014), I explain why I didn’t like Vision Boards. My feelings have evolved about them over time (I use them now for longer-term goals), but the tool I describe on the podcast continues to be a powerful asset for effective short-and long-term goal achievement.

Nathaniel’s Story

Nathaniel Drew joined us for a Genius Bootcamp in 2015 and later sent me this message:

“Hey, thank you for your genius Bootcamp. It was an amazing experience. …My life has changed quite a bit. A lot of positive manifestations that keep gaining momentum.” He added, “My wife saw a video of you …[and] approached me in tears because she related with your story so much. She read The Jackrabbit Factor and had me watch the video. In a month’s time we went from $19k/year expecting to be starving artists for the rest of our lives to over $70k/year and much more to come on the horizon. Thank you for sharing your world of abundance with us. It really means a lot to us. … Thanks again.”

I replied, “Great to hear, Nathaniel 🙂 I’d be happy to spotlight your story in an upcoming newsletter, if you would like to [send more details]. No hurry, just an open invitation.”

Well, turns out he has a fantastic story, and I’m thrilled he took the time to share it!

He related the events of the previous several years in his own words:

“I don’t want to be a starving artist anymore!” I said angrily standing outside my mobile home. I’m not sure if it was to my wife or myself or God or the Universe.

You see, when my dear Emily and I began talking about marriage during our courtship I told her “You know, if you marry me, you’ll be the wife of a starving artist for five or ten years.” Not only was she ok with that, but she was excited about it.

At the time.

As we lived the life of starving artists for 10 years we began to see others making a lot of money. Even artists doing exactly what I was doing making a lot more money than I was.

I had written music for musicals, commercials, short films, long films, and even some amazing feature films!

Nathaniel Drew’s Salt Lake Pops Orchestra on set for a music video

So many times both she and I would get so mad. We knew how talented I was. We knew my compositions were technically amazing and I had won plenty of awards. We just had little money to show for it.

Nathaniel Drew conducting the Salt Lake Pops Orchestra

So it was, just after our tenth anniversary that I got mad for the last time. I cursed myself. I cursed the universe. I cursed my wife and my children and anything else I could blame. Anger and blame after all was better than the depression I had been through because I was now taking back my power.

One night I walked in the door from a torturous day at my studio and I closed the old heavy front door into our warm trailer. “Hey, did you get that video I emailed you?” she asked.

“Uh, yeah, the rabbit one?” I asked with smidgen of annoyance.

“Yeah, [about] The Jackrabbit Factor! It really has changed the way I look at things!” she said hopeful, but trying not to be too excited.

From here I must rewind to let you know some things about Emily to give you an appreciation of the place that she’s in at this moment that she’s offered this video to me. From the time we married it took seven years and many fertility treatments until we finally gave up on the idea of having our own children. Once we gave up our resistance we had our first child. Our son Liam. We then had our second son Peter 18 months after that.

She should have been the most elated mother in the history of the world, but she was depressed. In order to combat her depression she became determined and decided that she was going to run a triathlon. In order to run this triathlon she was going to train all summer for a specific triathlon at the end of the summer. She was so determined. She got up every day and went out to run. She scheduled other races that would lead up to the triathlon. She got her sisters and a niece involved who would run with her or watch the kids while I worked on my latest film score.

I had never seen her take such initiative. In the process she ran a half marathon! When she finished that triathlon I had never seen her more alive and happy. She even called it “easy” and “fun” and wanted to do more!

Many aspects of her life were changing. She stopped working so hard and started enjoying the kids more. It was this kick of empowerment that led her to Leslie Householder’s materials. “I haven’t looked at it yet, but I’ll watch it tomorrow if you want.” I responded.

“You should watch it right now!” Emily said excitedly.

I sat down with her and found the video [the one called Discovering Your Hidden Resources]. We watched together. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but after a while I began to feel excited. I wasn’t sure what to say. We talked for hours afterwards about the law of attraction and about emotions and about what we really wanted.

Those following weeks were full of emotion and change. I began to get up every morning at 5am and started a vlog called the 7 Day Journey. I began to clean and fix up my house and be proud of my appearance. I began looking at houses and different properties that brought me joy. I began to live my life in a way that my priority was to feel joy as much as I could.

Most of all we felt joy and love and peace surround our desires. Things began breaking loose in my life. I began to focus on the house that I wanted. I focused on creating and feeling good. Taking walks, getting enough sleep, getting exercise, meditating. Every moment of my life was a quest to find joy. I began to believe in myself again. To feel powerful and alive. To feel in control. I was finding my true self and my purpose.

The first two months I received more money than I had the whole previous year.

I remembered how well my brother-in-law was creating in his life and we began partnering up in business. We had a $50mil. development that funded that March. I created a high-class resort with a restaurant and spa. But the best is yet to come. The totality of my work right now is going places and doing things that bring me joy.

…I felt inspired to go to a certain University I graduated from. I sat in their brand new beautiful and open library all day. It was so fun watching students. It was as if they had idea bubbles coming out of their heads. So much energy and fun, and I just felt the energy flowing through me.

I then felt prompted to go and talk with the President of the college. I headed out to his office, when on the way I ran into some ladies from the music department from where I had graduated. They were talking about a new music building for which they were going to be getting funding. And it hit me why I was to meet with the President of the University.

I was in the office and scheduled an appointment that they normally don’t give, at a time that was perfect. I met with the President, Dean of the school of Arts, Dean of the school of Music and several others. I found them another $30mil for their arts building and created the first social media wing/program in the world for the arts.

They also wanted me to do their social media marketing (something I’m very very good at).

Everything just fell into place including talking with the former Mayor of the city who set up meetings for me to meet with state legislators for more funds and setting up meetings with Facebook. It was just an avalanche of momentum all at once.

It feels good to know my purpose and to listen to my inner being. It is so amazing when source energy is flowing through me and I am so excited to see this manifest in my life!

The funny thing is that it’s not even that much of a surprise. It just feels natural. I am a powerful creator and have always been. The only reason in my past that money has not flowed to me is that I haven’t allowed it to.

I’m not just a musician.

I have been expanding all of my life and I now recognize that. I have felt bad as a composer when I wasn’t willing to let myself expand. I will continue to find things that truly bring me joy, and I am so excited to allow more and more expansion within my life and allow myself joy and happiness and money and amazing relationships. Every moment of my life is my choice.

I choose happiness. I choose wealth. I choose love.

Parked, or Rolling Toward Your Goal?

Ten years ago I sent a broadcast inviting those who had read The Jackrabbit Factor (and who had seen amazing things happen as a result) share their success story with Oprah. Most of the responses I received were enthusiastic and supportive. However, a few (who admitted they hadn’t read the book) responded with a question:

“If you practice what you preach, shouldn’t you just put the intention ‘out to the Universe’ and let it deliver what you’re asking for, without asking your readers to help you?”

Fair question. But remember, the key to putting the principles to work is that once you know what you want, you must see it in your mind as though you already have it, FEEL the victory now, and then when an idea comes to do something, you must ACT.

So that’s why I sent out the invitation. Not because being on Oprah was the goal, but rather because I thought that being on Oprah might take me a step closer to the goal. Being on Oprah was never “the goal.” It was not a destination. The ultimate goal was the vision I had for my family, and the positive difference I hoped to make for other families across the globe. Naturally, I knew that being on her show wasn’t the only way for me to achieve my goal, but I acted on the thought anyway, because that was the idea that showed up.

Taking action can be scary

By suggesting that my readers contact Oprah.com to share their stories and recommend my book for her show, I risked ridicule, judgement, and a possible flurry of unsubscribes. Taking action is scary, and yet I’ve discovered that action it’s necessary, and the fear is normal.

(I’ve also learned that having people unsubscribe is not a bad thing. I prefer to surround myself with like-minded people, so if I ever say something that turns someone off, I wish them well and know that they will find what they are looking for elsewhere.)

So to reiterate: When you set a goal, you must act.

Act where you are

I’ve also learned that no matter where I’m at now, or where I’m trying to go, I can only act on my present surroundings, like the acorn in the ground. The acorn does not need to act on the nutrients that are still three feet away; it must act on the nutrients in the ground that are already in contact with it. In time, as it grows roots, it will be able to connect with other needed elements a few inches away, and then a few feet away, and beyond; but it all begins with simply taking action right where it is.

As Wallace Wattles taught in Chapter 11 of The Science of Getting Rich:

“Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. You cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.

“Because you are not in the right business, or the right environment now, do not think that you must postpone action until you get into the right business or environment. And do not spend time in the present taking thought as to the best course in possible future emergencies; have faith in your ability to meet any emergency when it arrives.

“If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective.

“Put your whole mind into present action.

“…Act now. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin now. And your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment, and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment. You cannot act where you are not; you cannot act where you have been, and you cannot act where you are going to be; you can act only where you are.

“…Do not wait for a change of environment, before you act; get a change of environment by action. You can so act upon the environment in which you are now, as to cause yourself to be transferred to a better environment. Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in the better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.

“…Do not feel discouraged, or sit down and lament because you are misplaced. No man was ever so misplaced but that he could not find the right place, and no man ever became so involved in the wrong business but that he could get into the right business.

“Hold the vision of yourself in the right business, with the purpose to get into it, and the faith that you will get into it, and are getting into it; but ACT in your present business. Use your present business as the means of getting a better one, and use your present environment as the means of getting into a better one. Your vision of the right business, if held with faith and purpose, will cause the Supreme to move the right business toward you; and your action, if performed in the Certain Way, will cause you to move toward the business.”

My invitation to my readers that day was just one of those ideas that showed up, and sending the invitation out was simply acting on my present surroundings.

You don’t have to act on EVERY idea

While some of my readers did contact her company, other readers offered additional ideas:

One suggested I send her producers a book. Another suggested I go to New York and meet with a bunch of media representatives.

Although these suggestions may be something I will do at some point, at the time it didn’t feel right. And frankly, ten years later, being on Oprah no longer carries the appeal to me that it once did, and I’ve found that I can achieve my ultimate goals in so many other ways by simply acting right where I am.

So what was the outcome of my acting on that thought? Who knows! Maybe someone on her staff learned about the book and maybe it helped them. I never got a phone call, and that’s okay. At the very least it gave me an opportunity to experiment with, and write about, the principle of acting where you are.

I knew that if it was truly in harmony with my ultimate goals, it would come together at the right time. That it did not happen when I wanted it to did not prevent me from making progress in other ways. Even now, I continue to maintain a clear mental picture of how I am building my life to be, and will continue acting on the suitable ideas that come to me as they come.

Understand this:

God knows best how to bring your vision about, but He still expects you to move your feet.

After all, you can’t steer a parked car.

So what about you? What are your goals? Are you at least rolling, even if you’re not sure you’re headed in the right direction?

Do your best to act where you are to achieve your worthy objectives, and keep the thought: “Please nudge me in another direction if I’m wrong!” in the back of your mind. So long as you are at least rolling, God can steer you.

And if you go one way and discover that you need to turn a corner or make a U-turn, it’s not the end of the world. We will all make mistakes along the way, but remaining frozen is probably the worst mistake of all.

I felt lost

Kristi is a wife and mother of two young children, who experienced some significant changes in her life during the Mindset Mastery Program. It’s been fun to track her progress:

After Phase 1, she wrote:

“I have to admit, I’ve been so excited about everything I’m learning it’s been hard for me to pace myself. But after reading lesson 13 I understand why I need to do just that. I’m super excited about reaching my goals! THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and experience!! From the day I read The Jackrabbit Factor to today has been such an incredible journey. I LOVE where I’m going on this journey :)”

Read about the time I didn’t respond to her question.

After completing the course, she wrote:

[Before joining the Mindset Mastery Program] I signed up for Genius Bootcamp. I expected it to be in depth learning about universal laws. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much of a spiritual experience it was for me. I came with a very specific question of how to continue my business. I received a very clear answer to quit my direct sales business. That did not make any sense to me. I wrestled with it, but knew it was the right thing to do.

For a couple months I felt lost. I didn’t understand why I needed to let go of the success I had achieved. But I soon realized I need be working with youth. So many things from my past started to make sense to me. I signed up for the Mindset Mastery Program and dived right into it.

Read the rest of her comments here.

When she submitted her application for graduation, she said:

“I’m so excited to make this official! It’s been such a great experience. Thank you so much for doing what you do!”

I asked if she had a website she would like me to share, and she replied,

“This is a terror barrier for me. I’ve been preparing myself to ‘go public’ with my business. I have only shared with close friends and family up to this point. This [program] is giving me the confidence to now share with everyone I know. I definitely have some anxiety about it, but I know it’s time to take this leap and enjoy what’s on the other side of this wall :)”

Serving Two Masters?

Had a great conversation with one of my readers. Thought it would be worth sharing (name has been changed):

“Hi Leslie, thank you for all of you free literature. I do have a question or request. How can I reconcile your teaching (which I do believe is true) with what Jesus says in Matthew 6 of about not being able to serve 2 masters? This is my hangup. Thank you in advance, Becky

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)

I replied:

“Hi Becky, what is your concern, specifically? Can you explain further? I want to be sure I understand your question before I reply… Leslie”

Her answer:

“Hmmm… Thanks for asking that question. It has caused me to think. What do I really mean? I am on your email list and love seeing them pop up in my email…  the one titled “How To Rely On God For A Paycheck” caught my eye. As I began reading the article and before I finished it, I was back on your site downloading your book, Hidden Treasures. This prompted my question again about wealth and the Kingdom of God.

“A little background…

“I was raised in a Christian home and went to church but it wasn’t until I was in my 30’s (money issues) that I began reading the Bible for myself and began a personal relationship with the Lord. I am and have been a stay at home, homeschooling Mom for the past 20 years… Prior to children, I as a gung-ho business woman working for my mother in a small family business that made money but it seemed like we were always struggling…

“Growing up, as the middle child, I was intuitive and sensitive to the goings on in our family and know that money was always a topic or struggle. We certainly were not poor, always had food, clothing and a home. But it seems there was always debt and struggle. I have worked since old enough to do so and enjoy working.

“Now, I do work part time… and have been for over a year. My husband has a nice job and we are not poor, have food and a home but we do watch our pennies, budget like Dave Ramsey, and can’t just go out and buy anything if we wanted…

“So… I want to earn more money to be comfortable now, to buy a beach house and to have money for retirement. I want to give our children an inheritance and want them to not have to struggle. But, what can I do?

“Matthew 6 talks about not laying up for ourselves treasure on earth but in heaven. That we can’t serve two masters. Where my treasure is there is my heart also. I can’t see my heart clearly at this point and don’t know whether I am seeking treasure or the Lord.

“…when I was at this crossroads 7 years ago, I ran across the Jackrabbit Factor online. Ha, I forgot about that. I also purchased Portal To Genius and can totally understand how necessity can be the mother of inspired invention. I journal and will go look for my old journals. Well, if I remember correctly as a result of reading Jackrabbit Factor I did pursue […and got] a dream job for me. With that courage, I further progressed to starting the Respiratory Therapy courses… and [began] your [Mindset Fundamentals] Ecourse

“[But now I have this concern:] Wealth in this world – is it in opposition to Matthew 6 teaching? … Thanks for listening, Becky”

Before I had a chance to reply, she messaged me again:

“After writing back to you the other day, I have started the [Mindset Fundamendals] Ecourse once again. I did’t get through it completely the first go round. I am rereading the book now and then proceeding from there. Is that what you would suggest? Thank you, Becky”

Here is my reply:

“Hi Beth, thank you for your patience. Yes, I would recommend finishing the Ecourse. But about your question, you said:

“…I can’t see my heart clearly at this point and don’t know whether I am seeking treasure or the Lord.”

“To figure this out, ask yourself WHY you want to earn more money to be comfortable now, to buy a beach house and to have money for retirement. WHY you want to give your children an inheritance and to not have them struggle. Go deeper – think about the reasons you want these things. Is it just for ease and pleasure, or do you see a way that these desires could play a part in building His kingdom?

“Personally, I wanted a big house because I remembered being young and finding the Lord in my quiet times. At the time I dreamed of this luxury for my family, we were in a two-bedroom house with our family of 8, so I imagined having a large house so that my children find the Lord in their own quiet places. I imagined having a place where the extended family could gather for Sunday dinners. I imagined a place where we could open our home to larger crowds and hold meetings that turn hearts to Him. I imagined a place where the teens would want to bring their friends so that we could be a positive influence on them.

“When you get down to the root of where you heart is, then your treasures will be more clearly discerned.”

So what about you? If you knew that you would get exactly what you asked for out of life—nothing more and nothing less, what would be on YOUR list? What things or accomplishments would give you the greatest, most long-lasting satisfaction?

In conclusion, here’s the good news that is sometimes forgotten:

As you choose God to be your only Master, you have this promise: “…seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)

So, the objective is to simply do your part to make sure that you, at least, are not the limiting factor in what God can accomplish in your life.

I’m pretty sure He has even bigger plans for you than you can imagine. Choose Him to be your master, set your goals, make your plans, and look to Him to help you overcome the obstacles along the way.

Have faith, do your part, believe that He wants to bless you, and remain ready to say, “Thy will be done”. Not as a copout for when YOU lose faith, but as a genuine willingness to accept His will even when you’ve practiced unfailing faith.
