Shoes, a ring, seashells, and $5000

Did you know?

The part of your brain that helps you achieve your goals, ISN’T the same part of your brain that sets the goals. I explain this in more detail in this video, where I talk about the subconscious mind and how it helps you (or keeps you from!) achieving your goals. But there is yet another part of your brain that has a different important role.

It’s called the Reticular Activating System (RAS), the entryway through which almost all data enters the brain, and which filters the information that comes in, having an effect on what gets your attention.

Think of it this way:

What if you need an opportunity—but you can’t see the one right in front of you? What if you need more customers—but you can’t think of that one incredibly effective thing you could do right now to reach them?

The answers we need are all around us.

The resources we lack aren’t as far away as we think. Everything we need is only an idea away; or in more scientific terms, your Reticular Activating System simply needs to be alerted to bring those ready-to-go ideas/resources/and people to your attention.

You’ve already experienced your RAS in action. Maybe you noticed that when you bought a car, suddenly that kind of car began showing up everywhere. Or, when you thought you invented a clever name for your child, pretty soon you started noticing other children all around you with the same name.

Sounds mysterious, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not as mysterious as you think.

While these kinds of experience may seem inexplicable, remember that the Universe operates very predictably based on a set of natural laws. The system was set up perfectly in the beginning, and it continues to run perfectly as planned. Almost like a computer program created to handle different scenarios in certain ways based upon the data input it receives. If X, then Y. If A, then B. Now that computers are such an integral part of our lives, we humans are beginning to understand how such a system could be structured and yet appear or feel so random.

You experience this every day.

The New York Times published the following story, which illustrates on the micro how simple a delivery-system like this can be, once it has been set up properly to begin with:

The shoes that Julie Matlin recently saw on Zappos.com were kind of cute, or so she thought. But Ms. Matlin wasn’t ready to buy and left the site.

Then the shoes started to follow her everywhere she went online. An ad for those very shoes showed up on the blog TechCrunch. It popped up again on several other blogs and on Twitpic. It was as if Zappos had unleashed a persistent salesman who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“For days or weeks, every site I went to seemed to be showing me ads for those shoes,’ said Ms. Matlin, a mother of two from Montreal. ‘It is a pretty clever marketing tool. But it’s a little creepy, especially if you don’t know what’s going on.” Helft, M. and Vega, T. (2010, Aug 29). Retargeting Ads Follow Surfers to Other Sites.

As this story illustrates, what shows up can absolutely be a result of the attention you gave something. Click on shoes, and they come back to your computer screen time and again, no matter what site you’re visiting. (In fact, this is exactly what is happening with me and a beautiful baguette ring I clicked on at the JC Penney website a few months ago. I’m not bothered… I think it’s gorgeous. It kind of makes me happy every time I see it. But I would remove the outer stones and only keep the center 5, and I’d put it on yellow gold, and I’m a size 5. In case anyone is wondering.)

So based on what you click on, your computer screen can very naturally become it’s own kind of vision board. Be careful to only click on the kinds of things you want in your life!

Computer software that uses targeted ads is just an example of how life itself works.

Based on what you think, your life begins to take new shape according to the nature of your thoughts. So only think on the kinds of things you want in your life! Think less about the parts you hate. Think more about the parts you love, and think lots about the way you want it to be.

What shows up in your life is very much a function of the thoughts you choose. Corresponding opportunities, people, and resources are brought to your attention in response. Don’t worry too much about the unwanted thoughts that pop in, just replace them as quickly as you can when they show up. And think often and emotionally on your hopes and dreams, because by the same kind of system that marketers use to target audiences, life will bring you the ideas, resources, and people you need to help you achieve them. It’s automatic, like a computer program.

And then expect to find those things! The expectation is what activates your RAS, so you’ll notice them and have a chance to engage with them when they arrive. In many cases those things are already right there, but you just haven’t noticed.

Here’s an example from one of my students of how this works in real life.

She wrote the following to my husband:

So, your wife is a genius! The book was incredible…I have a great story… I could not put the book down, finished it in just a few hours one night. I was at the beach with my kids the next day after I was done, and decided to test the theory. We belong to a beach club defined by huge rock jetties and good shells are hard to come by. We’ve never ever found a decent shell. Anyway, I walked down to the water and realized this was a great place to test…after all, no better place for the universe to be able to provide than the ocean!! So I put my energy on finding those big white gorgeous shells – we’ve never seen them anywhere near our beach. I imagined us all picking them and carrying loads back to the house… I reached down into the water and immediately pulled out a sand dollar – hmmm…

We walked the length of the beach, no shells. I did not let go of my focus. At the end, we went through the lagoon, and my kids climbed up on the last jetty. For the first time, they wanted to keep walking onto the next beach. They wanted to climb down the other side of the jetty and keep walking. At first I said “no” the jetty isn’t really safe to climb over, we could get hurt….blah, blah, blah…

Out of no where my youngest finds a small path that leads right over the jetty. We have never, ever noticed it before. We are now on the next beach, I go down to the water, and start pulling these huge white shells out of the water – bigger that we have ever seen. My kids are picking them up off of the sand…it was so weird! We had armfuls! OH MY GOSH. The jackrabbits had literally turned into shells! It was wild. I sat down dizzy at the experience, and then realized the power. Now, I’m working on doing this with bags of money…I picture myself walking into my back yard pulling up bags of money instead of weeds…hey, you never know!

Shells, check. But what about money?

She wrote again 2 Months Later…

Ok – so you may remember my first experience …after reading the Jackrabbit factor…the shells at the beach. Well, at the end I think I mentioned that I would like to attract bags of money…I have, and I am blown away. In early September I put out …that I would like to have $5,000 within three months. I was willing to work for it (should an opportunity present itself), but really, I just wanted the money to appear…hey, what the heck, one can dream. Well, my parents took us out to dinner this past Saturday evening as a celebration as they have recently come into some money from my Grandmother’s estate (she died in March). At the beginning of dinner my parents handed my brother and I checks for $20,000. Oh my gosh! I now put it out there …when I need about anything …the concept of scarcity is gone from my life…there is an abundance. Once again, thank you for the Jackrabbit Factor!!”

So have you tested it for yourself? Share your story here.

If you haven’t tested it yet, what one problem (big or small) would you solve today?

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation at Work

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation is one of the most powerful concepts I’ve ever learned for effecting significant life changes. Understand it, use it, and your desired improvements become predictable. It is a dependable law of nature as described in chapter one of Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Your Money Matters (a free download).

Certified Mentor and Mindset Mastery Program Honors Graduate Robyn Young shares one of her experiences with the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. She writes:

Let’s break it down:

Perpetual: occurring continually, continuing forever

Trans- (prefix): so or such as to change or transfer

Mutation: a significant and basic alteration

In other words, continuing and ongoing change. The Law of Perpetual Transmutation states that everything is coming into or moving out of a physical form. It is evident in the physical world around us, such as in the water cycle. But it also pertains to thought: those thoughts that we give time, energy, and emotion to are the thoughts that will become physically manifest in our lives.

Early in our marriage, my husband decided that he wanted to attend graduate school in another state. At the time, we owned a home. We had purchased it with a federally subsidized loan that stipulated that this home had to be our primary residence. Since we were leaving the state, we had to sell it.

Although we planned to return after my husband’s graduate studies, we couldn’t rent the home out, or even leave it vacant for the 18 months we’d be gone. The housing market at that time was good, and homes in our area were selling, on average, in about four months. But by the time we were informed that my husband had been accepted into his graduate program, we were only two months away from the start of school. We had to sell the house faster than average.

It was possible, but would it happen for us?

Back then I knew nothing of the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. I didn’t know that having a dream and believing in the realization of it as if it had already happened would actually change the circumstances around me to be favorable to my desired outcome. But as a natural law, I did not have to understand it to be subject to it.

My husband and I did know, however, that if we were to accomplish this goal of selling our home, it would be because of our faith, not because of anything we could do to make our home sell in a specific period of time. We did what things were in our control—we beautified the yard and the interior, and we hired a realtor to sell for us.

The day we hired our realtor I actually struggled with that decision. I knew I was relinquishing control of the situation to someone who did not feel the same urgency about selling my home that I did. Mine was not the only home she was responsible to sell. I felt I had to do everything in my power for this dream to become reality, but would my agent work as hard as I would have?

I remember the realization that while I could not control the situation directly, I could increase my efforts to do the things I believed God wanted me to be doing. So I increased the frequency and sincerity of my prayers. I studied the scriptures every day. I served in my church, making special efforts to do my best with the assignments I had been given. And I believed.

Sometimes a negative thought would pop into my mind: “What if it doesn’t sell? Then what?” But I knew. My husband had a good job. If we couldn’t sell our home, we’d just stay. We liked our life as it was. It would be okay.

But after having those thoughts, I knew, I KNEW in my gut that the house would sell. So my “negative” moments always ended with, “But it will sell.” And I knew it would.

Four weeks before we left for graduate school, we closed on the sale of our home. The entire process had taken only one month. Although I knew nothing of the laws of prosperity, I knew that the work that had happened in our minds was a key part of what had happened in our lives. And now I know that believing in the idea, holding it there, and trusting God to take care of the things I could not control was exactly what I needed to do so that our dream could manifest itself in a physical form.

It was the Law of Perpetual Transmutation at work.

#23: Mysterious Connections, Uncanny Coincidences

Successful goal achievers learn to rely on unseen help, mysterious connections, and uncanny coincidences to help them accomplish their goals. How do these events come about?

How can you activate this help in your own life? How can you know that the help is there, and what can YOU do to participate in those kinds of miracles?

In this podcast (recorded in 2014), I explain why I didn’t like Vision Boards. My feelings have evolved about them over time (I use them now for longer-term goals), but the tool I describe on the podcast continues to be a powerful asset for effective short-and long-term goal achievement.

Parked, or Rolling Toward Your Goal?

Ten years ago I sent a broadcast inviting those who had read The Jackrabbit Factor (and who had seen amazing things happen as a result) share their success story with Oprah. Most of the responses I received were enthusiastic and supportive. However, a few (who admitted they hadn’t read the book) responded with a question:

“If you practice what you preach, shouldn’t you just put the intention ‘out to the Universe’ and let it deliver what you’re asking for, without asking your readers to help you?”

Fair question. But remember, the key to putting the principles to work is that once you know what you want, you must see it in your mind as though you already have it, FEEL the victory now, and then when an idea comes to do something, you must ACT.

So that’s why I sent out the invitation. Not because being on Oprah was the goal, but rather because I thought that being on Oprah might take me a step closer to the goal. Being on Oprah was never “the goal.” It was not a destination. The ultimate goal was the vision I had for my family, and the positive difference I hoped to make for other families across the globe. Naturally, I knew that being on her show wasn’t the only way for me to achieve my goal, but I acted on the thought anyway, because that was the idea that showed up.

Taking action can be scary

By suggesting that my readers contact Oprah.com to share their stories and recommend my book for her show, I risked ridicule, judgement, and a possible flurry of unsubscribes. Taking action is scary, and yet I’ve discovered that action it’s necessary, and the fear is normal.

(I’ve also learned that having people unsubscribe is not a bad thing. I prefer to surround myself with like-minded people, so if I ever say something that turns someone off, I wish them well and know that they will find what they are looking for elsewhere.)

So to reiterate: When you set a goal, you must act.

Act where you are

I’ve also learned that no matter where I’m at now, or where I’m trying to go, I can only act on my present surroundings, like the acorn in the ground. The acorn does not need to act on the nutrients that are still three feet away; it must act on the nutrients in the ground that are already in contact with it. In time, as it grows roots, it will be able to connect with other needed elements a few inches away, and then a few feet away, and beyond; but it all begins with simply taking action right where it is.

As Wallace Wattles taught in Chapter 11 of The Science of Getting Rich:

“Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. You cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.

“Because you are not in the right business, or the right environment now, do not think that you must postpone action until you get into the right business or environment. And do not spend time in the present taking thought as to the best course in possible future emergencies; have faith in your ability to meet any emergency when it arrives.

“If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective.

“Put your whole mind into present action.

“…Act now. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin now. And your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment, and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment. You cannot act where you are not; you cannot act where you have been, and you cannot act where you are going to be; you can act only where you are.

“…Do not wait for a change of environment, before you act; get a change of environment by action. You can so act upon the environment in which you are now, as to cause yourself to be transferred to a better environment. Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in the better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.

“…Do not feel discouraged, or sit down and lament because you are misplaced. No man was ever so misplaced but that he could not find the right place, and no man ever became so involved in the wrong business but that he could get into the right business.

“Hold the vision of yourself in the right business, with the purpose to get into it, and the faith that you will get into it, and are getting into it; but ACT in your present business. Use your present business as the means of getting a better one, and use your present environment as the means of getting into a better one. Your vision of the right business, if held with faith and purpose, will cause the Supreme to move the right business toward you; and your action, if performed in the Certain Way, will cause you to move toward the business.”

(Click here to get my 8-week study of this remarkable book! – use promo code “summer17”)

My invitation to my readers that day was just one of those ideas that showed up, and sending the invitation out was simply acting on my present surroundings.

You don’t have to act on EVERY idea

While some of my readers did contact her company, other readers offered additional ideas:

One suggested I send her producers a book. Another suggested I go to New York and meet with a bunch of media representatives.

Although these suggestions may be something I will do at some point, at the time it didn’t feel right. And frankly, ten years later, being on Oprah no longer carries the appeal to me that it once did, and I’ve found that I can achieve my ultimate goals in so many other ways by simply acting right where I am.

So what was the outcome of my acting on that thought? Who knows! Maybe someone on her staff learned about the book and maybe it helped them. I never got a phone call, and that’s okay. At the very least it gave me an opportunity to experiment with, and write about, the principle of acting where you are.

I knew that if it was truly in harmony with my ultimate goals, it would come together at the right time. That it did not happen when I wanted it to did not prevent me from making progress in other ways. Even now, I continue to maintain a clear mental picture of how I am building my life to be, and will continue acting on the suitable ideas that come to me as they come.

Understand this:

God knows best how to bring your vision about, but He still expects you to move your feet.

After all, you can’t steer a parked car.

So what about you? What are your goals? Are you at least rolling, even if you’re not sure you’re headed in the right direction?

Do your best to act where you are to achieve your worthy objectives, and keep the thought: “Please nudge me in another direction if I’m wrong!” in the back of your mind. So long as you are at least rolling, God can steer you.

And if you go one way and discover that you need to turn a corner or make a U-turn, it’s not the end of the world. We will all make mistakes along the way, but remaining frozen is probably the worst mistake of all.

Why I Believe in Time Warps

Are you Crazy Busy? Do you need a Time Warp?

Two weeks before I taught a Mentor Training class, I was on the verge of a meltdown. Too many things to do, not enough hands to do them with… and definitely not enough time to get it all done before the participants were scheduled to arrive.

In my frantic state, time seemed to race by and not many of my tasks were getting completed. Furthermore, I had to reluctantly stop in the middle and fly out of state because I was scheduled to meet with one of my mentors – a meeting that was not easy to come by and which I didn’t dare cancel.

After an incredible meeting (getting my head back in the right place), I came home at peace.

I didn’t immediately jump back into my preparations for the event. I spent some time with my kids in a non-rushed manner, and enjoyed peace of mind, knowing that everything was going to turn out okay.

(Note: nothing on my list changed. In fact, I even had even LESS time than before. The only thing that changed was the way I viewed the situation.)

Once I was ready, I returned to my tasks and calmly started checking them off one at a time. When I was done, I realized I still had about four or five days left to prepare, and yet there was nothing more that I needed to do!

Never in my life can I remember feeling so prepared for an event, with time to spare. In fact, I actually worried that the event might flop, because this was the first one I had prepared without feeling attacked by tremendous opposition.

(Previously, the amount of opposition I experienced beforehand was always the indicator for how well the event would go. The tougher the fight, the better the events always turned out, so long as I would just press on and make them happen anyway. As a result, I had resigned myself to the idea that every event I ever did would be a massive test of my faith, that everything would always have to get done in a panic at the last minute – and when there were pieces that didn’t get done – well, we’d just have to be at peace with letting those pieces go.)

Interestingly enough, however, this event did not test me like all the others had. It actually went amazingly smoothly and I felt untouched by the old challenges that used to get in the way and bog me down. I realized that my challenges were now of a different nature, perhaps because I had somehow “graduated” from the old kinds of challenges and was ready to move on to a new level of being.

In retrospect, I am convinced that as I allowed myself to think at a higher level than ever before, I literally experienced a time warp. I’m not talking about science fiction, I’m talking about the reality that “time is only measured unto man” and that with God, all things are possible.

I believe that when your thoughts are held in the right place, and when you hold the right mindset, time can stand still for you (or at least slow down) until you can accomplish what you need to do.

I’ve tested this and seen it help me out every time:

When I’m late and frantically trying to figure out how I will explain my lateness, the clock speeds up. If I calm down and picture everything turning out okay (letting myself feel the relief I’ll feel when I’m in my seat with time to spare), the clock slows down. And if I do this and show up “late” anyway, things have shifted to where my being on time didn’t really matter the way I thought it would.

Time management with these ideas in mind can provide a big boost toward the ultimate life mastery we’d all love to achieve.

So could you use a time warp?

Are you running as fast as you can and still falling behind?

Let me teach you how to experience this time warp phenomenon:

From a Mindset Mastery Honors Graduate and Genius Bootcamp Participant:

Super LONG and Super COOL Laws of Thought Story and Tender Mercies…

First Some Back Story…

Prior to the taking and graduating with honors from Leslie’s Mindset Mastery course, I had been living in a scarcity & doubting mindset for well over 20 years. For the past year or two I’ve been focused on implementing all that I had been learning in the Mindset Mastery course to change the trajectory of my mediocre life. Among many other tools I’ve been using to support my mindset shift into abundance is a “Day Dreaming” Word Document that I look over every day to “visualize and feel” certain goals into my reality (kind of like a vision board on steroids). I keep things in this document that I want to attract within a year’s period of time and I started this at the beginning of 2017, so it contains all the goals and dreams I want to attract into my life this year. Anyway, a few of the items that made it into my “Day Dreaming” document for this year are :

  1. A new fence because our East fence is about to fall over, and our South fence has enough slats missing now that our neighbor’s dog can come over and poop in our yard whenever it feels like it.
  2. A new roof because we’ve sustained enough wind and hail damage over the years to warrant the use of several buckets in our attic to catch the main leaks.
  3. Fix a hole in the brickwork on our house to the side of our garage door (a car rolled into it a couple of years ago leaving a moderate sized eyesore).

Each of these items are towards the end of the list of items in my “Day Dreaming” document for the year because I figured that the roof would cost over $5,000; and the fence & brickwork… well, I had no idea how much those would cost, but I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to pull any of these off until after attracting substantial increases in our business income throughout the year.

Mid April…

After mowing the lawn and seeing our back yard fence for the first time in a month or two, and realizing once again, just how bad our fence had deteriorated; A Thought crossed my mind to not let doubt continue to stand in my way from at least finding out how much it would cost to fix the fence… even though I was 99% sure we couldn’t act on it for a while because our income hadn’t improved yet this year. So I made a Facebook post to a community Facebook Group asking if anyone out there had recommendations for a reliable and reasonably priced fence repair person or company.

Within a week…

We had a guy come out and give us an estimate of about $2,000 for the two sections of fence we would need to replace.

Not more than an hour later our neighbor on the South of our house (who we’ve actually never spoken to before), knocked at our door to tell us she has someone coming over to repair the portion of fence we share so we could give him access to our back yard if he needed to come back there. I asked her how much he was charging & she told me it would cost only $50-$100 to do it. I told her he could definitely have access to our back yard, and that we’d split the cost. The Lord gives good gifts, and I was thinking that having the worst of it repaired for $25-$50 (our half of the cost) would get us by until later in the year when we could afford to put a brand new fence up… but that’s not the end of the story…

A few days later…

Even though I was thinking that I’d wait on fixing the East section of our fence; right after finishing my morning exercise (when I was all sweaty and gross), I had a recurring thought to go talk to our neighbors on the east of us right then about my intention to fix the portion of our fence that we share. I went right away, and in doing so I learned that THEY were already making plans to fix it! We talked about sharing the cost, but I didn’t know how I could even come up with half right now. As we got talking my neighbor told me how their insurance claim worked when their house was damaged in the storms the previous month. I learned that their deductible was not required to be paid up front, but was deducted from the check the insurance company sent the them… and then they hired someone to do the work cheaper than what the insurance company had paid so they had money left over for other things. Dang! I had thought all of these years (without looking into it of course) that we’d have to come up with $1,000 deductible out of pocket, so I’ve never even given a second thought into filing an insurance claim to have our roof fixed. With this new found knowledge of how home owners insurance claims work… I immediately went home & filed a claim with our insurance company. Upon doing so, I discovered that our deductible is not $1,000… it’s only $500 (even better!).

One week later…

The insurance inspector came to our home to assess the damage. When he finished his work he said he has enough evidence to submit a recommendation for us to receive a new roof, and to replace the East fence. He said they would ALSO pay for the water damage repairs in our kids bathroom (which I had forgotten about until he asked me if there was any water damage inside the house)!!! Can you say TENDER MERCIES? Holy cow we are being so blessed!

As I was sharing this tender mercy with my daughter later that afternoon we got talking about feeling genuine gratitude for things we want to be blessed with… and feeling the actual feelings as if a goal had already been accomplished. I described to my daughter how challenging it’s been for me over the years to FEEL the feelings and gratitude ahead of time. I found myself telling her of one time that I actually felt some pre-created (is that a word?) gratitude. As I began describing the first time I ever really felt real genuine feelings of joy and gratitude for something as if it had already happened, the realization struck me forcibly that the scenario I was describing to my daughter was at the beginning of April and I was picturing and feeling joy and gratitude for our fixed fence and new roof! Wow!!! Heavenly Father gives REALLY good gifts when we follow the correct principles upon which those gifts (aka blessings) are predicated!!

Yesterday…

I met with the project manager of the remodeling company that will be replacing our roof & repairing our bathroom from water damage. He reviewed all the insurance paperwork and then proceeded to discuss what he could offer…

  1. There is a coupon for $500 that will satisfy the deductible!
  2. He OFFERED to give us a $250 cash back credit if we allowed him to put a sign in our yard as advertising!
  3. He pointed out several items that really don’t need to be fixed by a professional that we could do ourselves & keep the money for doing so.

All in all, we will receive over $1,500 back to put towards:

  1. Our back fence repairs… that will only cost us $600 because: We are splitting the cost with our neighbor who we discovered is a Veteran and can get a VA discount on the fence materials at Lowe’s or Home Depot… AND we got the labor cost cut way down too by getting other bids – HOW COOL IS THAT?!!!),
  2. The brick repairs next to our garage door (that we discovered will only cost about $200

So basically, we are having over $10,000 worth of home repairs completed within the next two weeks… that we don’t have to pay for, and in fact we’ll be RECEIVING about $600 above and beyond all repairs that will help our cash flow!!!

To wrap up, I just want to point out that each of these tender mercies were a SINGLE IDEA AWAY all this time! All I really needed to do was to doubt not, but to be believing… having faith merely the size of a grain of mustard seed so that I could receive them!

How to Survive the Downs

Jacob Lund/Shutterstock

Life is like a roller coaster. When things go downhill, throw your hands in the air and smile!

Have you ever met someone whose life seems to be falling apart and they’re happy anyway? Have you ever thought, “Wait a minute, you’re supposed to be miserable and depressed!”

It’s true. There are some who are simply in denial, and who hope that the problems will go away if they just ignore them. However, there are others who feel happy even when things are going down because they know a secret. They understand the 19 Rules of Prosperity.

These people can feel happy during a downturn because they know the ride never goes downhill forever. By law, it always turns upward again at the bottom – just like a roller coaster. They smile now because they’re focused on the longer term; and they’re already thinking about the joy and heights that life will take them to next.

Now, while we’re on this “roller coaster theme,” imagine you’ve saved for years to take your family to an exciting theme park on the other side of the country. You’ve pictured the laughter, the fun, the memories you plan to create: the joy of being together, the food, the free time; it’s all so very wonderful!

Now it’s finally time to take that trip. You enjoy a relaxing plane ride, settle in at the hotel, spend the night, and in the morning you have a full day to take in all of the theme park attractions. After entering the gate, you notice that just inside the entrance there are two roller coaster rides to choose from. The first one is called “Straight-Shot to Success” and goes like this:

“Straight Shot to Success”

You get on, and it pulls the line of cars all the way to the top of a twenty-story tower where ….

… it lets you off so you can climb down the stairs to do it again.

Look at the enthusiasm in this picture, just before unloading to climb down and repeat the experience all over again! (Wouldn’t it make for a pretty boring roller coaster ride? Yes. But isn’t that what we think we want out of life? A steady, predictable, safe and easy climb to success?) The thing is, if that’s what we got out of life, I think we’d feel pretty dissatisfied with the whole experience. Without the lows, the highs mean nothing.

So, let’s take a look at the second roller coaster ride called “Joy in the Journey,” which instead goes something like this:

“Joy in the Journey”

You get on, and it pulls you to the top of a big hill and then turns you loose into a series of ups and downs, loops and turns. Everyone is terrified and laughing, all at the same time.

Even when the people plummet at break-neck speeds straight toward the ground, they have a smile on their face.

Now, is that twisted, or what? Are they in denial?

No. They are genuinely enjoying themselves, because they know that the terror is temporary, that the danger is an illusion, and that it will come to an end. They know that they are in a controlled, safe environment that is simply giving them the appearance of danger. Deep down, they know everything is going to be okay in the long run.

Which rollercoaster ride do you think would have the longest waiting line? “Straight-Shot to Success,” or “Joy in the Journey?”

I choose the latter. Here’s what helps me endure the scary parts:

Believe it or not, like a roller coaster ride, Life itself is a safe environment, even with all its dangers.

Contrary to appearances, it truly is a safe place to be. From God’s vantage point, the things we fear are nothing to Him, including death itself.

Do you realize that the life you live is precisely the life you would have chosen all along? THIS is the life that brings you the greatest joy: the life with all the ups and aggravating downs. So be grateful for your downs, and as you allow your heart to swell with gratitude, you’re putting yourself into the right mindset to receive next the best “ups” that God has to offer.

The ups and downs we experience help us feel.

The change from up to down (or down to up) is precisely what makes it possible for us to recognize the difference from one emotion to the other. Like I said before, without the downs, the ups would be meaningless. The lows help us feel and appreciate the highs.

Bob Proctor says, “Most people tiptoe through life, trying to make it safely to death.” Do you see the irony in that? Instead, we should have courage and press on toward our dreams with full, fearless intention.

Fear not!

As Mark Twain said, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.”

You have a choice of what to think about. So think on the expected highs that put a smile on your face, instead of worrying about the imagined train wreck at the bottom of the hill that hasn’t even happened yet.

It is only when your heart is at peace that it is truly prepared to receive inspired solutions to your problems.

So, if you’re headed in a downward direction, be at peace. The tracks are bent and will surely guide your roller coaster car up to the top again in time. It’s going to be thrilling! And in fact, according to the Law of Rhythm, you’re already on your way. Originally published Mar 12, 2008

My Favorite Rejection Letter

Life can be hard. One principle that brings me comfort when disappointment strikes is the Law of Polarity (as described in Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Your Money Matters – a free download). And I’ve experienced its truth:

Contained in every adversity is the seed of equal or greater benefit. (Napoleon Hill)

But even though I understood this principle, it was still frustrating when I tried to get my book The Jackrabbit Factor published in 2005, but received letter after letter from publishers who weren’t interested. There was, however, one letter that stood out from the rest. I had studied the criteria of what the publisher was looking for, and was convinced that my book and their company was a match made in heaven. I was absolutely 100% confident that what I had written was exactly what they were looking for!

So when I got word that even THEY had rejected my book, I threw up my hands and decided to just publish it myself. In hindsight, I’m grateful I did. Self-publishing my books is the only reason I’ve been able to give them away for free, and to earn over a million dollars because of it. (More about that…)

Because that rejection letter ultimately changed my path for the better, it went down in history as “my favorite rejection” of all time.

Whenever I share the letter, those who have read my book The Jackrabbit Factor erupt with laughter. (Those who haven’t usually just grin, as they wonder what’s so funny.) With all due respect for the publisher who rejected me, (I hold no malice), I thought it might be inspirational to share the letter with you. I hope this helps you think of your rejections, and how you might be able to see them in a different, happier light:

So, take a fresh look at your obstacles and setbacks. If something seems bad now, think of it as a blessing in disguise. By law, it must contain the potential for something phenomenal. What could the blessing be?

Related: Along Came a Spider

Looking for the upside to your challenges (and being grateful for them before you even know what’s good about them), can put you in position to receive incredible blessings. On the other hand, when you focus only on the inconvenience of your obstacle, you can miss the blessing altogether.

Read The Jackrabbit Factor (free) and find out why this rejection letter makes me laugh.

#16: How to Surrender (and why you’d want to)

With effective goal achievement, there comes a point where it’s time to “let go”, or “surrender”, because if you try to force it, your persistence can backfire. This podcast is an excerpt from a personal coaching call with me and my client, who graciously allowed this to be made public so that it can help others who have similar questions.

My client had seen God’s hand in her life before, and acknowledged that He has ensured her needs have been met many times. But she worried:

What if this is the first time it doesn’t work out?
What if I’ve used up all the grace tickets?
What if I just keep busting myself up against the laws?
What if everything that matters to me falls apart?

Discover the answer to these questions and many more in this episode of the Rare Faith Podcast.

Show Notes:

The misunderstood principle of letting go or surrendering
Giving up – not to the enemy but to God
Examples of a pattern: JS in the grove ready to abandon himself to destruction, Peter using Rare Faith to walk on water but still needing a rescue, Alma snatched from burning.
There is a time and a place for giving up.
Surrendering doesn’t mean do nothing, it’s letting go after you’ve tried everything and it didn’t work
I want to be led. I don’t want to impose my agenda. I want total faith.
Choosing rock bottom
Being clear on how you want to FEEL
What is your time frame to accomplish that? By NOW
Are you willing to RECEIVE? Snarky.
Beating myself up for my inability to receive
What if the thing you want is a few years down the road?
If I can be guaranteed that, then I can hang in there.
Labor – what kept me going was knowing that it WILL end. I can endure anything if I know it will end soon.
Get out of your own way. What does that even mean??
The struggles are not for nothing. It IS going to happen, no doubt
You and me hanging out in heaven saying, remember when? That was HARD! We will sit in a garden somewhere…
You found out it would take 15 years. How would you tackle today’s tasks?
With relief.
If you don’t want to think about heaven, think about 15 years from now, reminiscing back.
Goals written in present tense, vs. goals in past tense
Restaurant story
Get comfortable with a longer term plan, if for no other reason than to keep you out of anxiety. If that’s all it’s for, it’s enough of a reason.
Why I love Dave Ramsey
Yes you can triple income in a short time, but it’s important to also live by the law of the harvest and develop habits and accept the slower processes
Quick success? If they have not also established some long term habits, they will fall.

Next goal: to know that you have sufficient
Time for your loved ones, time to serve.

1) remember, you’re on the X year plan
2) don’t be afraid to find out exactly where you’re at, listen to Dave and come up with a plan
