Hope Floats the Financial Boat

Think for a minute about the natural reaction of non-swimmers who are thrown into deep waters.

Can you picture it?

They panic, and thrash violently. They become consumed with the fear of, “What if I go under and can’t come back up?!” Full of adrenaline and to avoid the worst, they claw and pound the water, in a frantic effort to stay afloat.

Eventually, if they don’t get some help, they go under out of sheer exhaustion.

This is also a vivid metaphor for people who feel like they’ve been thrown overboard without a life jacket financially.

Maybe they intentionally “abandoned ship”, leaving a regular source of income to go out on their own in search of another boat, or maybe it happened in a storm. However they got there, they may feel like a non-swimmer, fully exposed to choppy waters, surrounded by mysterious depths, and at risk of drowning in bills and other pressures.

In a situation like that, the natural inclination is to panic, and work too hard frantically trying to stay afloat – ultimately wearing themselves out and sinking into despair.

The truth is, that the principles which keep a new swimmer afloat in the water are the same principles that keep you afloat financially:

1) Take a deep breath,
2) Relax, and
3) Keep your chin up


That’s how you stay afloat in the water, and that’s how you stay afloat financially, too.

Stop for a moment and let the following statement sink in (no pun intended):

Having money does not create peace of mind; it begins with peace of mind.

Before you can learn to swim efficiently, you’ve got to learn how to FLOAT. Not just in swimming, but in your finances, too. I’m convinced that people who enjoy true abundance live abundantly, not because everything always goes their way, but because they have learned how to float and swim in choppy waters without being overcome by exhaustion.

And floating only works when you stay calm. When you are calm and keep you chin up, you float; not just in water, but with finances, too. Staying calm allows your mind to be relaxed enough to notice the inspiration that helps you solve the problem. Don’t cut off the Source of your answers by freaking out!

The cure for fear is not courage, the real cure for fear is knowledge. When you know WHY you can be at peace, it’s easier to feel peace. Choosing peace of mind also keeps you in the path of all the opportunities and resources you’ll need. (Read Hidden Treasures FREE – to find out why this works.) Freak out, and you jump off the path.

Whether you leave a ship by choice or not, finding yourself in the water can be terrifying, especially if you never learned how to swim. But hope and optimism literally and financially make you more buoyant.

Discover the truth of this and you may also discover that swimming peacefully allows you to get where you want to go without a boat at all. (A shout-out to all you entrepreneurs out there!)

So, breathe… relax… keep your chin up… and trust the current to take you to the next boat or port on your journey to financial freedom.

Immediate Results

I received a fun message, reminding me of how simple it can be to apply the principles for truly immediate results.

Check this out:

Hi Leslie! I was thinking of you today. I had lost your book in my daughters room and she finally found it several days ago. I’ve been rereading all of the underlined portions and did something that worked!

I got my car washed yesterday and they put a scratch in my clear coating. My husband said to go back and ask what they would do to make it right.

When I read all of the reviews on Yelp, everything was terrible! My initial reaction was “Why should I even go back? They’re not going to fix anything anyway!”

I decided to apply what I learned in your book.

I decided to be grateful that they were actually going to do something to fix my car and be happy as I was driving over there.

When I got there I met the manager and asked him to come and look at my car. He said, “Are you angry about it?

I said, “I’m not mad. I’m just kind of bummed.”

He said, “I can fix bummed.”

Long story short, he waxed and buffed the scratch out of my car, cleaned up the milk on the inside that the other person had missed. He even offered me a 25% discount for him to do sealant on the whole car to protect it.

He was super nice. I even hugged him goodbye. He said he’s always willing to fix things when customers come in with a “Can you please help me” attitude.

Had it not been for your book, I would’ve gone in with a completely different emotion.

How to make changes that really last

My thoughts today are on the topic of change. How to change. Why we don’t change. How to make changes that really last. Let’s explore this, shall we?

Years ago, I learned in a science class that all living things are impelled toward growth. That’s one indicator that a thing can be classified as “living”. I think deep down we all want to grow, and change, and improve different aspects of our lives – even when we are content – because a desire for growth is part of our nature as a living thing.

But change can be hard, because of…

Programs

Programs, like software on a computer, run in the background of our minds. They carry out instructions, like the programs that run self-driving cars. But most of the time, these programs running silently 24/7 are leading us to places we really don’t want to go. They aren’t fundamentally nefarious, they just do what they’re designed to do: to help us live into the images in our minds, to which WE have given the most intense energy.

That can be a problem if we’ve spent a lot of time worrying about failure, or fearing rejection, because programs dutifully steer us subconsciously to behave in ways that deliver those outcomes. We have programmed our minds through repetition and thoughts charged with (positive or negative) emotion.

But there are also programs that were established long before we were old enough to know good from bad, right from wrong. Many of these early-established programs are some of the worst kind. If we don’t identify, uninstall, quarantine, or replace these faulty programs, our destination in life will likely be a terrible disappointment.

There are programs on our mental hard drive that were uploaded by outside influences, too, and we have accepted them. Each program, when certain data input is received, directs us to think a certain way about it. That way of thinking shapes our behaviors, and our resulting circumstances are a natural byproduct of those behaviors, and the programs that shaped them.

So if we want to change our behaviors or our circumstances, we must begin with taking an inventory of, and making necessary upgrades, to our mental software.

As a marvelous computer – the most marvelous computer ever designed – your mind began receiving data input even before you were born. As you grew and continued to gather data, you didn’t know that you could choose how to think about what took place. When you didn’t know how to think about something that happened to you, you looked to your parents or other trusted models, to adopt thinking habits that helped you fit comfortably into the world in which you were born.

  • If they hated money, you learned to hate money.
  • If they worried about having enough, you learned to worry about having enough.
  • If they got angry when things didn’t go well, you learned to get angry when things don’t go well.

It’s not their fault, and it’s not your fault; we’re all just doing the best we can to cope with life’s challenges the best way we know how. But regardless of your upbringing, the good news is that there is good to be gleaned from every kind of family environment, positive or negative. Once you discover your power to choose, your background or upbringing is no longer a determining factor in your success.

It’s time to realize that how we think is truly and ultimately our choice.

So even though our results have been a direct outcome of the way our mind processed the input it received previously (ie. our experiences, conversations, media), we can begin right now to override any program that holds us back.

It begins with understanding the process. It goes like this:

data comes in -> programs run -> triggers are tripped -> we react to the triggers -> we experience results

  • Data = experiences, words we hear, other people’s behaviors, health conditions, checkbook balance, anything that can be perceived with our 5 senses.
  • Programs = long-established thought patterns, or behavior conditioning,
  • Triggers = an event that bugs, offends, angers, hurts, or disappoints you.

When data comes into your mind through your five senses (ie. you see a late bill, you hear your spouse criticize you, you feel your muffin-top press into your waistband), there are programs in your sub-conscious mind that are already running. And if the data input matches the memory of an experience already lived, a program kicks in and throws back the trigger to initiate a similar response to the one you experienced the first time. Not because it’s the best response, but because it is familiar, and therefore “safe”.

(After all, you didn’t die the first time, so subconsciously, it’s a safer bet than any other potential response, which – you never know – could be fatal! Or so it thinks.)

To get better results, we have some options. We can either:

  1. Control the data input
  2. Respond differently to our triggers, or
  3. Change our programs.

But no matter how hard we try, we can’t always control the data input. All we can control is our response to that data. But it isn’t easy to control our response when it’s initiated by a trigger thrown up by one of our long-established programs. Our reactions are often habitual, on auto-pilot, like a self-driving car that keeps going straight, even when we really want to take the next exit.

So if we can’t effectively change the data input, and if we’re not super good at choosing better responses to our triggers, that leaves programs.

As we change our programs, it no longer matters what the data input will be. It no longer matters what our triggers have been. It’s the source point where we reclaim our power, our agency. And changing our programs has a direct effect on our results, putting us squarely back in the drivers seat with full navigational control of our life.

So ask yourself this:

  • How long have I been struggling with my relationships?
  • How long have I dealt with financial issues?
  • How long have I been feeling that way about myself?
  • How long have I been addicted to _________?

With programs constantly running in the sub-conscious mind, repeated results are sadly predictable.

Would you like something to change?

I promise you this:

When a better internal program has been uploaded, better results come naturally. With better programs running, you’ll be astounded at how people’s responses to you improve. Improved health habits will feel like a natural part of you. The money will start to flow in faster than you spend it. It can all happen naturally, as you begin to improve the way you think, because of Universal Law which cannot err.

Are you 100% excited about your life just the way it is?

If not, if there are some changes you’d like to see in your environment/relationships/checkbook/health, then you no longer need to get frustrated about trying to make changes that just don’t stick. Your mind is the greatest computer ever created, and the only thing that needs to change are the programs you allow it to run.

What programs are running now?

If you’re always strapped for time or money, then you may have a sub-conscious program making sure that never changes. That is your ‘truth’ about life. To you, that is just the way life is. A new truth will never take hold until your mind has been scanned for the ‘virus’ that infected your belief system. You’ve got to turn it off, uninstall it, or at least quarantine it. And then most importantly, turn on a program that supports the truth you choose: I have all that I need. I have plenty of time and money to do all that God put me here to do.

No matter how successful you are, check for programs that aren’t serving you.

I thought I had life pretty well figured out. After learning the principles and applying them consciously for about 6 years, I was happy with my results. I felt like I had all the understanding and tools I needed to make other changes, as I continued to discover areas where I could improve. However, a trusted mentor talked me into attending another training, where I discovered one major program that was running my life, which had not been noticed on anything more than a superficial level.

So, even though I was feeling pleased with my results, my mind opened up to see a way in which it could be infinitely better, as I consciously recognized the program, and took care of it the way I was taught. As the old saying goes: Pigs don’t know pigs stink. Sometimes we have to submit ourselves to an experience before we will recognize additional areas where we can improve. The rewards for this kind of continued self-exploration are amazing.

Did you recognize any of your programs firing away when you saw the price: $1000?

Maybe a program said:

  • ‘I can’t afford that, no matter how good it is.’ Or…
  • ‘What a scam.’ Or…
  • ‘She’s just trying to make a buck off of me.’ Or…
  • ‘Pshh. That’s nothing.’ Or…
  • ‘I’d have to go into debt if I did that.’ Or…
  • ‘No seminar could be worth that kind of money.’

Did any of these pop up for you? Or did it trigger a different thought altogether?

Maybe it said:

  • Wow, sounds powerful. I’m going to find a way to be there. There’s got to be a way.

I challenge you to take a look at how you responded to the simple data input: the program costs $1000.

Can you think back to what happened in your life to create the program that fired when you saw the price?

If you don’t remember, you could probably find out, if you allow yourself to experience a(nother) life-changing event or training.

Did you notice the response that said, ‘Pshh. That’s a drop in the bucket’? There are actually people who think that way, and who would refuse to go, because if it’s that cheap, it must not be very valuable.

Isn’t it interesting how one statement – one bit of data input – triggers a different program in every individual who sees it. The data itself is just dots on a paper, and has no inherent meaning, until you assign meaning to it. But most of the time we don’t realize that we’re the ones who assigned meaning. It was so automatic, so quick.

Side note:

Be careful not to judge a person’s thinking by their outward circumstances

Even if a person is not wealthy, having a healthy wealth-consciousness will put him or her in a state, which, like a magnet, will attract to them every event, person, and circumstance they will need for it to eventually come true in real life. It’s not where you are that matters, it’s where you’re pointed, and the way you think determines the direction you’re going.

So don’t be automatically impressed by a person who appears to have it all. You don’t know how they think, or whether they might be pointed toward disaster. By the same token, don’t be automatically unimpressed by a person who appears to have nothing. They may be pointed in a very admirable direction, poised to enjoy greater success than the one who currently appears to have it all.

I challenge YOU to behave as though you already have the quality you want. Think: how would a wise and wealthy person respond to an opportunity to learn something new?

When people think, ‘I can’t afford that,’ they’ve already shut down the part of them that picks up on the idea (which does exist) that allows them to invest in themselves without jeopardizing other financial obligations.

If you thought, ‘I’d have to go into debt for that,’ then although you may attend the event, you’ll predictably incur debt to do it. Did you know that it doesn’t have to be that way? Don’t tell me you’re on a fixed income. That’s an excuse. You can attend it, even if you don’t have the money right now, and you could attend it by going into debt, but you don’t have to. You can do it even without going into debt.

“But where will the money come from??”

Wherever it is NOW.  Don’t shut out the solution simply by deciding there isn’t one!

Instead of freaking out that you don’t have $1000 for a seminar that will help you change your life, take a deep breath and see yourself feeling the joy and experiencing major breakthroughs, and you will put your mind in tune with the ‘way’ to get yourself there, if you’ll relax and allow yourself to move forward ‘as though’. Make the commitment to be there. Expect to find a way. Don’t wait until all the lights are green before you pull out of your driveway. You’ll hit some red lights, but don’t stay home just because of a few red lights. Your solution already exists, and you’ll likely find it at the end of the things you can do right now.

The person who hopes for, and expects to find a way is the one who finds the way. People who allow the program ‘I can’t afford it’ to determine their behavior are the people who remain trapped.

Now I know, I know. A seminar won’t change your life; you will. But a seminar can provide you with the environment and the support to get it done. And no, I’m not offering a $1000 seminar. It was just an example. But there ARE two seminars that I do highly recommend:

Why choose joy

Hi All,

I’m taking a FB fast through the rest of June but HAD to break it just long enough to log in here and share some cool experiences I’ve had this week. It’s a little long, so grab a cup of tea or box of donut holes and settle in. 🙂

1. I’ve been sleeping too hot lately and decided we needed a ceiling fan for our bedroom. Something small and low profile and JUST enough to draw the cool air in from the window. I don’t like sleeping in wind. 🙂 I made a little quick movie of how it would feel in my mind and then went about my day. Today, I went to help my daughter pick up a bed she bought off FB marketplace from up the road and while I was there, the lady said “We have other stuff we are getting rid of if you need any of this” she sweeps her hand across the room and I see a white ceiling fan sitting on a chair. I ask her how much she is asking for it and she said “Nothing. You can have it.”

2. At the concert mentioned next, we see someone walk right in front of us with a large Tupperware container of Rainier Cherries. It’s cherry season here and they are abundant but they are still as expensive as all get out. Rainier cherries are my favorite and I said to Vince “Dang, those look good! I want to get my hands on some. I wish someone we knew had a tree with more than they can eat that we could just go pick.” Within ten minutes I get a text from a friend that I didn’t know even had any cherry trees saying “I have too many cherries. If you want to come pick some, come help yourself before the birds get them.”

3. I get a text on Monday from my daughter who (also texting her dad at the same time) said “You two have a date Wednesday night to see Chris Isaak at the Britt.” It’s our favorite outdoor concert hall – small and surrounded by lovely trees – and Chris Isaak is someone we both have enjoyed for years.

She had purchased us lawn seating because that’s all that was left. Lawn seating meant getting to the box office at 3 to pick up our tickets and then getting in line at the gate to wait for it to open at 6. The line, by then, would already be quite long from the people who already had their tickets in hand and then the rush would happen when the gates were opened and we all clamored for a space on the grass. The concert didn’t start until 7:30 so the thought of 4 1/2 hours of waiting was dreadful. All this on the hottest day of the year so far – a heavy, muggy, 97 degrees. Rain showers certain.

In front of the grass is a 1/3 circle of comfy benches, reserved seating, of course. In front of the benches is a small, lower artificial lawn which doubles as an orchestra pit in during symphony season. The absolute BEST seats in the house are the front row of benches, within 40 feet of the stage, if that. Even if the people in front of you in the pit are standing/dancing, you can sit comfortably and see right over their heads.

At about 11 am, I called to see if, by chance, there were any seats available for an upgrade. There were two…on opposite corners of the benches. We debated and decided we’d rather sit uncomfortably on the lawn (where it’s hard to get comfy and there are people potentially crammed up close or standing up the whole time) than to sit separately.

The lady told me to call back at around 4 to see if any seats had open. I did and none had. She told me to call back at 5:05 when the calls would be transferred to the actual venue box office (rather than the downtown offices) and they might know if any had opened up.

Before this point, we had gone back and forth and back and forth about whether to go early and stand in line or just show up when we wanted to and hope for a good seat. At one point, I took a single deep breath and envisioned out loud to my husband, “We’re just going to go when we want and we’ll get the perfect spot.” That was that.

We left the house at 4:45 and drove toward the venue. At 5:50 I called the box office and asked if there were any seats available for upgrading. Here’s how the conversation went:

“Hi. My name is Stephanie Lee and we have two tickets we are supposed to pick up there tonight. They are lawn seating and i’m calling to see if there happen to be any seats that have opened up?”

Nice Box Office Lady (heretofore refered to as NBOL): “Were the tickets purchased in your name? I’m not seeing any record of them…”

Me: “No. They were purchased over the phone on Monday by my daughter, Annabelle.”

NOBL: “Annabelle Lee?”

Me: “yes.”

NOBL (in a suddenly enthusiastic tone): “Oh! We have been talking about her off and on all day!”

Me: “Really? Why?” (perplexed…they’d never met her so I know her dimples didn’t make an impression like they so often do.)

NOBL: “Oh, nothing bad. It’s her name. I’m a HUGE Edgar Allen Poe fan and his poem Anabel Lee is my favorite. I asked her if she knew it when she called and she was so cute on the phone. We chatted about it.”

Me: “Oh how funny! Yeah…She gets that a lot but only from well read people.” (we laughed).

NOBL: “So you’re wanting two seats?”

Me: “Yes, if there are any available.”

NOBL: “Is Annabelle the one picking up the tickets? Are you coming to the concert with her?”

Me: “No. She isn’t coming. She actually bought them as a gift for her dad and me. She texted us and told us we have a date and bought us the tickets. We’re so excited.”

NOBL: “Oh my gosh! How old is she? (I tell her 17 and she says) Seriously?! That is SO nice of her to do that for you two! What a great girl you’ve got there!”

Me: “Thank you! We adore her too!” 🙂

NOBL: “Do you mind holding for a minute?” (Of course not, I say) She says she has to run check on something.

Five minutes later I hear her whispering to her coworker and can only decipher “Annabelle’s parents…I asked Chris and he’s totally cool with it.”

NOBL: “We found you two seats, front row, section A”.

I am dropped jawed. These are LITERALLY THE BEST seats in the house. I thank her profusely and hung up. We detoured to REI to grab some $5 ponchos in case the dark clouds decided to dump on us.

The time comes that we are at the venue walking up to the ticket booth and I have four windows to choose from, one of which says “closed”. I make eye contact in passing with the lady behind that window and smile. She opens her window and waves “I can help you here”. I tell her my name and before i can finish it she says excitedly, “You’re Annabelle’s parents!” She turns and repeats to her co-workers “Hey, this is Annabelle’s mom and dad!” Then back to me “We love her name and love that she bought you guys tickets. You’ve raised a great kid, mom and dad.” Then she turns and says “I have your tickets right here”. She hands us the envelope and says “Theres a little something extra in there from us. Enjoy your evening and good job with that kid of yours. She’s a smart cookie.”

We look in the envelope and there, with our tickets, is a gift certificate to our favorite restaurant in that town. We are stunned. We thank them profusely and float through the gate.

We find our seats and discover a volunteer usher (they are EVERYWHERE here) is waiting near our seats. As we sit down she says “Oh, YOU’RE the ones who got a couple of the Artist’s reserved seats! Lucky you two! That NEVER happens!”

Evidently the performing artist gets X number of seats they can offer to traveling companions or whatever. Evidently, even if they don’t need them, they RARELY remember to give them up so they are rarely available to the public. They are the best seats in the house. Turns out, when she went to “ask Chris”, she meant THE CHRIS! As in Isaak.

As I sit down, I remember the little movie I made in my mind at home about showing up when we wanted and finding the perfect seats. And here we were…even better than I had imagined.

To top it all off, Chris Isaak walked RIGHT BY US during his first song as he walked through the audience and the weather was PERFECT! I cooled down as the sun set, there were no mosquitos, and not a drop of rain fell. It really was so amazing and Chris and his band were so entertaining, told amazing stories, and didn’t once say anything off color or unsavory (unlike a couple of his music videos from the 90’s). It was fantastic.

So, here’s the interesting common thread in all three of these stories:

When I try really hard to “manifest” stuff, it seems like such an unproductive struggle.

When I choose visions from a place of joy and “wouldn’t that be fun?”, they seem to happen almost “too easily”.

The trick for me is to remember what Marianne Williamson says that the Course in Miracles says about miracles: There is no degree of difficulty for God when working miracles.

Note to self: choose joy whenever possible.
